When safety performance earns its reward

Giant Tiger · Aviva Canada · Draivn

Aviva Canada built a commercial auto insurance program that gives safety-focused fleets what they have always deserved: coverage priced to their verified risk. Giant Tiger proved the model in practice. Draivn made it operationally possible.

Together, all three parties designed a program that turns telematics data into a shared language – one that fleets, brokers, and underwriters can all read and act on.

Aviva’s fleet telematics insurance program

Aviva Canada designed its Fleet Telematics Insurance Program around a straightforward principle: fleets that demonstrate better loss experience resulting from disciplined fleet risk management should pay less if it can be validated. Better validated performance in, better prices out.

Designing the program required Aviva and Draivn to work closely together from the outset. Aviva brought deep underwriting expertise and a clear view of what data was needed to price commercial auto risk with confidence. Draivn brought the technical architecture to collect, validate, and deliver that data in a form that underwriters could actually use. The result is a program that reflects both parties’ requirements – rigorous enough to be commercially sound, and simple enough that any well-run fleet can participate without a technical project.

To qualify, fleets consent to share telematics data through Draivn’s neutral platform. In return, Aviva underwrites based on verified, current risk exposure rather than lagged proxy data. The link between safety investment and insurance value becomes direct, visible, and continuous.

“We wanted to build a program that genuinely rewards fleet operators who invest in safety and risk management. Working with Draivn, we were able to design something that gives us the data confidence to offer better terms to fleets that earn them – and to stand behind that pricing between renewals, not just at renewal time.”

Giant Tiger: A fleet that earns its rating

Giant Tiger operates one of Canada’s most disciplined private fleets. Its accident rate and Ontario CVOR violation rate reflect years of deliberate investment in driver training, safety systems, and operational standards.

PMTC & Aviva 2025 Fleet Safety Award – Large Fleet

In 2025, that commitment was recognized publicly when Giant Tiger won the Aviva-sponsored Private Motor Truck Council of Canada’s Private Fleet Safety Award for best-in-class safety and fleet management among large fleets. Joining Aviva’s telematics program gave Giant Tiger a direct commercial return on that investment – insurance pricing that reflects actual risk, not a blended pool average.

“We’ve invested significantly in building a safe, well-managed fleet. This program means that the investment shows up directly in our insurance terms. We can see exactly how our performance translates into value, and that’s a clear incentive to keep raising the bar.”

How draivn enables the program

Draivn is the infrastructure layer that makes the program operational. It connects to fleet telematics systems – in Giant Tiger’s case, GeoTab – and delivers structured, validated risk exposure data directly into Aviva’s underwriting workflows. No manual exports, no IT projects, no data shared beyond what’s needed.

Three design principles shaped Draivn’s role in the program:

  • Fleet data protection. Fleets retain control of their data throughout. Nothing flows without explicit, consent-based authorization. Giant Tiger’s data is used for the specific purpose of supporting its insurance relationship with Aviva – nothing more.
  • Simple enrollment. Connecting to the program required no technical project on Giant Tiger’s side. Draivn connects directly to GeoTab, normalizes the data, and begins delivering structured risk exposure immediately. The barrier to participation is as low as possible.
  • Consistent transparency. Fleet, broker, and insurer see the same validated picture – not just at annual renewal, but continuously. Aviva can engage proactively if something changes. Giant Tiger can see the direct commercial impact of its performance in near real-time.

“The program works because Aviva and Draivn designed it together around what actually matters – verified risk data that underwriters trust and fleets can act on. Protecting fleet data and making enrolment frictionless weren’t afterthoughts; they were preconditions for the program to work at all.”

What each party gains

GIANT TIGER

Safety investment translates directly into premium value. Performance is verified continuously, not just at renewal. The case for maintaining high standards is financially clear.

AVIVA CANADA

A high-performing fleet with fully aligned incentives. Underwriting confidence built on verified, current exposure. Competitive pricing on genuinely low-risk accounts, with active monitoring enabling a real partnership between renewals.

THE MARKET

High-performing fleets stop cross-subsidising the average. Insurers take on better-matched risk. The incentive to invest in safety becomes economic, not just operational.

The result

Giant Tiger is now insured under terms that reflect its actual risk profile. Aviva has continuous, verified visibility into one of Canada’s best-managed fleets – a client whose incentives are fully aligned with its own. Both parties can act together if performance changes, rather than discovering it at renewal.

For the hundreds of well-run fleets across North America that still don’t receive credit for their safety discipline, this partnership shows what the path forward looks like.
