Carrier Management recently highlighted a clear trend in personal auto insurance: the better customers understand their policies, the more they trust their insurers.
We found the same pattern in JD Power’s small commercial insurance research, where greater understanding was linked to higher satisfaction and stronger intent to renew.
These findings are not specific to commercial auto. But they raise a question: could a better understanding of insurance decisions strengthen trust and satisfaction among fleets too?
Where understanding breaks down
Consider a typical renewal.
A fleet provides its information, the broker submits the account, and the insurer returns a decision. If that decision is unfavorable and comes without a clear explanation, the fleet may wonder whether the insurer evaluated its actual business or simply treated it like an average fleet.
The insurer may have sound reasons for a premium increase, tighter terms, or a declination. But if the broker and fleet cannot see those reasons, the decision can appear arbitrary.
Confused, the fleet asks the broker to find other options. This creates more work for the broker, while the insurer loses a client that might otherwise have renewed.
A clear explanation can change that outcome by showing how the information the fleet provided connects to the decision it received.
Restoring the connection
To understand the insurer’s decision, the fleet does not need to know its rating formula. It needs an answer to a simpler question:
Does the risk picture behind this decision look like the fleet we actually operate?
Answering that question requires a shared view of risk: a current, verified picture that the insurer can use, the broker can explain, and the fleet can recognize. Building that view is difficult because commercial auto risk data is spread across different systems, formats, and sources.
One fleet risk profile, three different uses
The Draivn Fleet Risk Profile creates that shared view. It brings together all relevant operational and risk characteristics, reconciles and validates the information, and compiles it into one insurance-ready risk profile.
The Profile gives each party the same verified facts to use in its own role:
For the insurer or MGA, it provides validated risk exposure that supports underwriting, portfolio management, loss control, servicing, and claims decisions.
For the broker, it strengthens the submission and helps explain the insurer’s response in terms the fleet can recognize.
For the fleet, it shows how its business appears in the insurer’s eyes and helps to understand what it can improve.
Working from the same profile does not mean everyone must reach the same conclusion. It means everyone has a shared factual basis for making, explaining, and understanding commercial auto insurance decisions.
